Cars that are fitted with towballs for towing caravans will also be fitted with at least one or two electrical connection sockets by the tow ball. These sockets are known as 12N and 12S sockets. Power from the vehicles electrics (indicators, fog lights and sidelights etc) is transferred to the caravan through the 12N socket, Supplemental power used by the caravan (including, reversing lights, battery charger and fridge) are supplied through the 12S socket.
The 12n socket is coloured black and has 7 numbered pins.
